Falcone-Borsellino Airport, known as Palermo Airport (or under the old name Punta Raisi Airport), is located 35 km north-west of Palermo, the capital of Sicily. It is one of the busiest airports in southern Italy, with many domestic and international flights.
For trips to and from the airport in Palermo, you can use the following means of transport:
Prestia e Comande bus runs daily between Central Station / Politeama (Piazza Castelnuovo) and the airport. The trip takes 40-55 minutes, depending on where your exit station is located (Piazza Castelnuovo or Central Station). The ticket costs 5.80 €.
The first bus leaves the airport at 06:30 in the morning.
The first bus leaves Politeama at 04:15 and passes until 11:15.
The bus leaves every 30 minutes.
Trinacria Express serves the line between Palermo Airport and the main railway station. Travel time is about 60 minutes. The train leaves every hour. One ticket costs € 6.00.
Taxis are not a recommended mode of transport, as there is a high probability that you will overpay, paying at least 50.00 euros for a one-way trip. However, if you do not have another option, try to negotiate with the driver before getting into the car. You will find a lot of taxis waiting for you in the landing area. One of the most reliable taxi companies is Radio Taxi Trinacria.
If you do not like to use the crowded public transport, consider booking a private transfer that will be waiting for you at the airport and will take you to your hotel or where you need it.
Transfer companies will send a professional driver who will be waiting for you in the arrival area with the name.
If you are traveling with small children, child safety seats can be booked in advance.
For those who prefer to explore this area on their own, there are several car rental companies, such as Sixt or Europcar, that offer their services directly at the airport. To not be left without a car, order them online.
In case you arrive with a large group of people, the best option is to rent a bus before you arrive. After that, bus rental companies will inform you about your destination.
Segesta Autolinee company cooperates with the airport of Palermo, with its help you can get to Trapani. From there, you can also visit the magnificent island of Pantelleria, Favignana and Levanzo, or Erice (a small but significant village).
In July and August, the line runs four times a day (two trips take place every week in the rest of the year). The stop at the airport is outside the exit and on the right.
Stops in Trapani: Via Fardella, Via Marsala, Via Mazzini and Via Ammiraglio Staiti. Tickets can be booked online.
Frequently asked questions about transport from / to the airport
- Question: I arrive late at the airport. Will this be a problem for me to get to the city?
A: No, there are bus and train lines throughout the day, but if you miss them all, take a taxi, but be careful and agree on a price before the trip, as the so-called Palermo taxi drivers are well aware of the overpayment.
- Q: I have an early morning flight from the airport, are there any hotels at the airport where I can stay?
A: Yes, you can book a room at Hotel Villa Modus Vivendi, just 0.9 km from the airport, at Casa Fondo Orsa, 1.5 km from the airport. They offer full-service Wi-Fi and a 24-hour front desk.
- Question: I would like to spend one day in Palermo between flights. Is it possible
A: Yes, of course. The best way to do this is to take one of the buses that take you directly from the airport to the city center and are the most convenient way of transportation. Unfortunately, there is no luggage at the airport, but you can leave your belongings at the Central Station.
- Question: I continue my journey outside Palermo. Are there any direct lines from the airport to other cities?
A: Directly from the airport you can visit only Trapani. All other destinations include first visiting the Central Station of Palermo, and then taking the bus or train that takes you to your destination. You can visit Cefalu, Taormina, Catania and many other beautiful Sicilian places.
- Q: Can I exchange money at the airport?
A: Yes, at the airport there are several exchange offices and ATMs working around the clock and seven days a week, but it is better to exchange money before the trip and have the euro with you, since the rate will be much higher in place and no currency other than the euro will be accepted.
