Officially known as Karol Wojtyla Airport, Bari Airport (BRI) is located about 8 km northwest of the center of Bari. The airport was first a military airfield built back in the 1930s, and remained the same until the 1960s, when the first plane for the general public took off from its runway.
The bus provided by Tempesta runs every half hour from the airport to the central railway station in Bari (located in the city center). A one-way ticket costs 4 euros, and buses are located in front of the departure section.
NOTE. The advantage of Tempesta buses is that you can pay the driver directly, and you do not need to worry about buying a ticket in advance.
Using the bus line number 16, which is provided by the local bus service, you will probably realize that this is the cheapest way to get to the center of Bari (Piazza Moro is the last stop). The ticket price is only 1 euro. The first bus leaves at 5:10 and the last at 21:35.
Although the FM2 metro takes you to the main railway station in just 13 minutes, a ticket is not as cheap as a bus ticket, as it costs 5 euros.
NOTE: the metro is not a metropolis. This is a regional train that runs every 45 minutes, arriving from Bitonto in Bari Central, driving through the Airport.
the ferry port is located near the Old Town and takes about 20-25 minutes walk from the main train station (after you take the bus from the airport to the station). You can use the bus line nr.20, and the stop is located right at the entrance to the port.
Taxis are available around the clock and without transfers. The most recommended taxi services at the airport are EuroTaxi, Radiotaxi and Taxi Apulia, and a trip to the center will cost you about 20 euros.
NOTE. Avoid informal drivers who offer cheaper services, as you may be charged a higher price as soon as you arrive at your destination.
If you decide to book your private transfer or maybe you need a minibus, if you travel with a large group of people, you can arrange everything for 40-70 euros, depending on the car you choose.
Those who prefer to explore the city on their own, but want to avoid public transport, car rental companies such as Sixt, Europcar and Locauto, offer their services right at the airport. It is recommended to book them online.
If you are traveling with a large group of people, the best option is to rent a bus. It is best to do this online. After that, bus rental companies will inform you about your destination.
If you have just landed at Bari airport and you need to go to Matera, you can take a train from the airport to Bari Centralla (it takes 13 minutes). Go to the Ferrovia Appulo Lucane railway station (next to the central station you just went to) and wait for the train heading for Matera. Tickets can be bought right there at the ticket office, the trip costs 4.80 euros, and it takes about an hour and a half.
Frequently asked questions about transport from / to the airport
- Question: I arrive late at the airport. Will this be a problem for me to get to the city?
Answer: This will not be a problem, as the bus lines operate all day every half hour, but if you miss them all, take a taxi, but be careful and agree on the price in advance, because you can overpay, especially late at night.
- Q: I have an early morning flight from the airport, are there any hotels at the airport where I can stay?
A: Nearest hotels to Bari Airport:
Hotel Parco dei Principi (4 *) — 10 minutes walk from the airport; It offers free Wi-Fi, breakfast and parking.
Vittoria Parc Hotel (4 *) — 3 km from the airport, free Wi-Fi, parking and breakfast, room service and laundry
- Q: I would like to spend one day in Bari between flights. Is it possible
A: Yes, of course. The best way to do this is to take one of the buses that take you directly from the airport to the city center and are the most convenient way of transportation. There are no luggage lockers at the airport, but you can leave your luggage at the train station for 5 euros (the first five hours, each additional hour — an additional € 0.70)
- Q: I continue my journey outside of Bari. Are there any direct lines from the airport to other cities?
A: To visit nearby cities, the best option would be to first go to the station, and then take a bus or train that takes you to your destination. You can visit places like Polignano a Mare (with beautiful beaches), Giovinazzo or Molfetta.
- Q: Can I exchange money at the airport?
A: Yes, at the airport there are several exchange offices and ATMs working around the clock and seven days a week, but it is better to exchange money before the trip and have an euro, as the rate will be much higher in place and no currency other than the euro will be accepted.
