Riddles and secrets of the sights of Lisbon

For the long history of its existence, the capital of Portugal has changed several names. The last and most melodious was Lisboa. In Russian, it is pronounced as Lisbon.

Sights in Lisboa

Lisbon has a special charm. He, like a magnet, attracts filmmakers, poets and writers. It can not be compared with the popular capitals of Europe, far and wide, as a base for tourists. He has a unique aura, formed by the steep turns of the history of Portugal.

In the area of Belem on the banks of the Tagus are concentrated many historical sites of Lisbon.

To inspect everything, it will take several days. It is best to start with those that deserve special attention. They will talk about the past power and prosperity of the country, the largest maritime empire of the past centuries.

Torre de Belém and Padrão dos Descobrimentos

Old Belem Tower (XVI century) is not only a unique symbol of Lisbon. She is ranked among the 7 wonders of Portugal and is on the UNESCO List. In 1514, Manuel I ordered the construction of a monumental watchtower to protect the city from the sea. Architect Francisco de Arruda, 6 years working on its construction, applied a new decorative style that emerged in Portugal — Manueline. The name came from the name of the monarch, who was fond of the construction of structures of unique beauty.

There is a marine theme in Manueline: the ropes are intertwined with floral ornaments, shells and artichoke fruits, which served as a remedy for scurvy. The eclecticism of architectural details is amazing. The teeth of the Gothic form are decorated with crosses of the Knights Templar, the angular eastern turrets side by side with a balcony and a gallery in the spirit of the Italian Renaissance. In the fancy decor of the Belem Fortress, the influence of geographical discoveries and traditions of other countries is noticeable. One of the most recognizable architectural monuments of Lisbon has become the hallmark of the capital.

Not far from the tower is Padrão dos descobrimentos — a monument to the discoverers (XX century). On board the ship, aspiring to unknown lands, is a group of 32 people.

In addition to the pioneers of Vaska da Gama, Magellan and others, it included emblematic figures of the epoch: Heinrich the Navigator initiated the search for new lands, the poet Louis Camoens sang the exploits of the sailors.

Moshteyrou dos Jeronimos

The monastery of the Hieronymos was built around the same period as Belém. The two iconic sights of Lisbon have a lot in common: the Manueline style, an ancient origin, the absence of serious damage after the earthquake of 1755 and the inclusion on the UNESCO list.

[quote font = «arial» font_style = «italic»] Both were created by the decision of Manuel I. The monks of the Jerónimos order were to pray for the king and the successful return of seafarers from distant countries. [/ quote]

The Portuguese and guests of the city consider the monastery of St.. Jerome on Praca do Imperio the most beautiful temple of Portugal.

It was designed by architect Juan di Castilla. In the former monastery, much is admired: columns richly decorated with Lombard ornaments, tiled paintings of azulezhush, an openwork gallery with stone lace arches.

Mosteiro dos Jerónimos became the burial place of King Manuel. The skillfully executed figure of the monarch, lying on the lid of the sarcophagus, is striking with realism. Here the last shelter was found by people who glorified the country: the discoverer of Vasco da Gama and the poet Luis de Camoes.
