The most significant and popular architectural sights of the Costa Dorada should include:
- Roman aqueduct;
- Roman Amphitheater of Tarragona;
- Poblet Monastery;
- Santa Maria Cathedral.
This ancient architectural monument of Spain is only part of a large aqueduct that could deliver water over a distance of 25 km. Call it the «Devil’s Bridge.» According to legend, the bridge was not built by people, but by the devil, who wanted to get the soul of the one who was the first to cross it. And this first was not a man at all, but an ass.
The construction of the aqueduct was carried out in the 1st century BC, and in its intended purpose the construction was used until the end of the XVIII century. Part of the bridge, which has survived to this day, reaches a height of 27 m. Its length is equal to 217 m. The “Devil’s Bridge” has been included in the UNESCO World Heritage List since 2000.
Modern tourists who come to the Costa Dorada will be able to closely examine the majestic monument of the past, to touch the stones, saturated with ancient history. The edges of the gutter, located at the very top of the aqueduct, are fixed with the help of concrete slabs, so tourists without fear will be able to climb the upper part of the structure and walk along the bridge. From the heights there are picturesque landscapes on Tarragona and its surroundings.
The aqueduct is located on the territory of a large landscaped park. There are no usual paths here, only trails trampled by the feet of tourists who come to look at the ancient structure. The park with pine trees is perfect for walking and having fun. You can go here freely, no tickets are required.
Roman Amphitheater of Tarragona
Tarragona was once the residence of the Roman emperors, so the amphitheater was built here as a place for entertainment. Bloody spectacles, battles of gladiators, whipping guilty, battles with wild beasts — all this was arranged by the rulers in order to have fun and their loved ones. Not far from the Mediterranean Sea on a high hill, this landmark, built in the II century AD, is located. The Roman Theater is open-air and can accommodate up to 13,000 visitors.
Only in the middle of the last century, archaeologists were able to completely clean the monument from the sand. The amphitheater in Spain has been preserved in fairly good condition. And today you can see the main gate, stands and a large arena. This place remembers not only gladiator battles, but also reprisals against priests during the times of persecution of Christianity.
The Roman Theater is part of the whole museum complex of the Costa Dorada. It also includes the Roman Circus, where chariot races were held, however, there is little left of it, and the Museum of History.
This is a functioning monastery, which is considered one of the largest in Spain. There are guided tours for tourists, but in a strictly fixed time, so as not to disturb the internal order. In the XII century, the monastery was part of the so-called «Cistercian triangle», which unites the territory of the Costa Dorada.
The complex includes the pantheon of the royal house, as well as the royal residence. For this reason, the best sculptors worked on the creation of various decorations. In the premises of the monastery you can see the luxuriously painted tombstones, stairs, library, refectory and other rooms. Interesting for tourists such attractions as the royal tomb, as well as unusual galleries with vaults, located on the territory of the courtyards.

A magnificent staircase leads to the entrance to the temple from the central facade. The main entrance is decorated with a majestic carved bas-relief depicting paintings of the Last Judgment. Here are the beautiful statues of the Mother of God, the prophets and apostles.
