Big Buddha on Samui: full review, photo, how to get there, reviews

Most Thais are Buddhists, so in Thailand there are many different places of worship built by the adherents of this religion. It is impossible to call the exception and the island of Samui, the biggest pride of which is Big Buddha.

Content:

The Big Buddha or the Big Buddha is a gilded Buddha statue that sits in the lotus position. Its height reaches 12 meters, width (from the knee to the knee) — almost 6 meters.

Big Buddha on Samui is on the platform, along the perimeter of which there is a fence with bells hanging on it. To attract good fortune and free yourself from sins, you need to hit each of these bells. The statue of the Big Buddha is surrounded by small sculptures of Standing Buddhas that symbolize the days of the week. If you wish, you can make an offering to the statue, symbolizing your birthday.

Buddha statue was erected in 1972. Local residents are sure that from that time Buddha took the island under his protection, protects him from all sorts of misfortunes and natural disasters. According to residents of sunny and carefree Samui, since then they have been avoided by any troubles.

Interesting places

Big Buddha on Samui stands on a hill, to it leads a wide staircase of 60 steps. This staircase is divided into 3 parts: it is customary to go upwards along the central part, and downwards along the side ones. The staircase has a very original railing, made in the shape of serpent with dragon heads.

At the foot of the stairs, on its two sides, there are buildings with a statue of the Reclining Buddha, small (human-sized) statues of Buddha, figures of saints. All of them can bring flowers or incenses sold here.

Some hundred meters from the stairs, right in the sea water, there is a fabulous sculptural ensemble. Here you can see a mermaid, a horseman on a horse with a dragon’s head, a monk, a flutist. And the main character of this exposition is a woman with fangs, who kills the enemies of local residents.

By the way, from the top of the site, though there are beautiful views of the sea, Koh Phangan Island, Samui Island, but the photos are not very good — trees and construction are in the way. To get good pictures you need to go around the hill and go behind the Buddha, from here you get excellent shots with views of the island of Phangan and the Gulf of Thailand. A special “highlight” is the picturesque stones lying on one line and the poles sticking far away from the old pier.

It is forbidden to wear t-shirts and shorts to religious places in Thailand, clothes should be more strict. But the Big Buddha is an exception, in such clothes hundreds of tourists come here every day, and this does not cause indignation in anyone. But one rule will still have to be observed: below, in front of the stairs, shoes must be removed and raised barefoot to the statue.

Below there is a small market with souvenir shops, where you can buy clothes, jewelry, souvenirs and, of course, Buddha statues. Prices there are quite high, the same is sold much cheaper in the markets and in stores.

But one shop still deserves special attention, it will be interesting at least just to see the specimens displayed in it. In Thailand, such creativity is developed as the making of popular movie heroes from metal and from spare parts for old cars.

So, in this shop are sold transformers, and from very small, to a size larger than human growth. Here really, what else to bring from Thailand ?!

How to get there

There are no exact addresses on Samui, you have to get to all places of interest by landmarks, and the Big Buddha is no exception. The statue is located on Phan Phan Island, near the Wat Phra Yai temple and airport, from the northeast side of the island.

Getting there is not difficult. It is necessary to go along the coast along Bo Phut beach to the pier, from which ferries depart to Koh Tao island. Next to this pier there is an arch, which you need to enter — from there there is a road to the island.

If you want to stay for a while not far from this place, you can book a hotel through the service Hoteluk (see below) — there you can immediately see in which system of booking a room in the hotel you need are cheaper. Discounts can be up to 80%.
