Banks of Cambodia: services, office and ATM addresses

If you are going to Cambodia for the first time, you are probably interested in the question of how much money you should carry with you. In this article, we will tell all that travelers need to know about monetary settlements in Cambodia.

Cambodian currency

The official currency of Cambodia is the riel, but the US dollar is freely circulated on a par with the entire country. Almost all hotels, shops, restaurants and even street vendors prefer to quote prices and pay in US dollars. Many Cambodians even get paid in dollars and pay them for utility bills, rent and large purchases. In addition, in many parts of the country, especially those bordering Thailand, Thai baht are accepted for payment.

In recent years, the average rate of Cambodian currency to the US dollar is stable and amounts to about 4,000 riel for 1 dollar. As for Russian rubles, about 7000 riels cost 100 rubles. However, there is no point in taking Russian money with you, as it’s unlikely to change them there.

If you are going to Cambodia for a month or less, it is best to stock up on your cash dollars. Take bills of not too large denomination, as in small shops and cafes with them there may be no change. Of course, you can always withdraw money from a card at local banks and ATMs, but in this case you will have to pay commissions of both Russian and Cambodian banks.

There is no need to specifically change dollars on a riel, as they will often give you change on dollar bills. Local currency is convenient to pay for small purchases such as fruit or food on the streets, as well as trips on the tuk-tuk. By the way, due to the fact that sellers often round up prices in dollars in a big way, it is even more profitable to pay with riels in some cases.

Banks and ATMs

The banking sector in Cambodia has about 55 commercial and specialized banks, about 70 microfinance institutions, as well as more than 2,000 exchange offices and 1,500 ATMs throughout the country. Regulates the entire banking system of the main bank of the country — the National Bank of Cambodia.

The largest banks in the country are Acleda Bank, Canadia Bank, ABA Bank, Vattanac Bank and CAB Bank. These organizations have a developed network throughout the country, so that in any city you can find their offices and ATMs. Cambodian banks provide standard financial services: opening and maintaining accounts, issuing cash from bank cards, buying and selling currencies, international money transfers and cashing traveler checks. However, it is not profitable to exchange traveller’s checks in Cambodia, since the commissions for this operation can reach 5%.

The branches are usually located in the business part of the city, and ATMs are concentrated in the main tourist places: in the central streets, in supermarkets and near the markets.

ACLEDA Bank — The largest bank in Cambodia with an extensive network of branches and ATMs in all provinces of the country, as well as in neighboring Laos and Myanmar.

The head office of the organization is located in Phnom Penh, where 21 more branches of this bank are located, and the blue ATMs of ACLEDA Bank in tourist cities are caught at every turn.

However, some banks in Cambodia do not serve cards of foreign banks. For example, the Post Bank of Cambodia (Cambodia Post Bank) has not yet realized the possibility of issuing money using international cards.

Cash withdrawal conditions

All ATMs serving cards of foreign banks issue US dollars, while many banks set limits on one-time cash withdrawals. Most ATMs accept cards of international payment systems Visa, MasterCard and Maestro, however, a fee is charged for withdrawing cash from third-party cards (on average, $ 3-6). Additional fees may be charged by the card issuing bank, thus, one cash withdrawal operation will have to pay up to $ 10. As a rule, information about the commission of the ATM owner is indicated on the device itself, and it is better to get acquainted with the rates of your issuer in advance.

Information on the screens of ATMs is duplicated in English. Keep in mind that most devices do not issue banknotes in denominations above $ 20. If banknotes received at an ATM are in poor condition, try exchanging them at a bank branch, because in some places you may refuse to accept them.

You can withdraw cash from the card at the bank office. To do this, you will need the card itself and a passport from which the office staff will take a photocopy.

Often it is more profitable to get money on hand than at an ATM, as some organizations do not charge a commission for this. You can also ask the bank to give you money in bills of any denomination.

Exchange offices

Numerous exchangers are located on the main streets and near the markets. As a rule, the course in them is worse than in offices and terminals. When receiving money, pay attention to the state of the banknotes: often money changers try to slip dilapidated or damaged banknotes to tourists, which may refuse to take even in a bank.

Cashless payments

Paying by bank card in Cambodia is far from everywhere, but in recent years in most tourist areas of the country they have been accepted for payment. Terminals for service of cards are in all prestigious hotels, shops and restaurants, as well as in some places easier. However, it must be borne in mind that for using the card you may be charged an additional fee (2-4% of the total bill).

Money transfers

The easiest and most reliable way to send money abroad is a bank transfer. This operation can be performed at any branch of the bank; all you need is to have only a passport. Typically, an international transfer takes 3-5 business days, and this service is quite expensive — due to all fees, the commission can be up to 15% of the amount transferred.

Alternatively, you can use instant transfers Western Union or MoneyGram. They are usually faster, but fees and exchange rates remain high. In addition, in some offices there may be restrictions on the amount of transfer.

Traveler’s checks

Like bank cards, travelers checks are accepted only by banks and large hotels, shops and souvenir shops. Some small guesthouses can also offer similar services, but their commissions are usually very high. The most common in Cambodia are American Express checks in US dollars. The usual commission for cashing a check is 2-4% (minimum $ 2).
