When the feast of the beheading of John the Baptist is celebrated

The beheading of John the Baptist is a feast in honor of the martyrdom of the Baptist Jesus Christ and the preacher of the word of God, who prepared the people for the coming of the Savior.

John the Baptist is a famous and important figure in the Christian faith. Like any martyr canonized, the Baptist of Christ had a terrible ordeal. He ended his life in a painful and violent death, sacrificially entrusting his fate to the will of the Lord.

The Orthodox Church piously honors the feat of the prophet. It was on the day of the Beheading of John the Forerunner that a strict fast was established, expressing the entire grief of the Christian people about sudden loss.

history of the holiday

John the Baptist was sent down from above, in order to instill faith in the hearts of people and to prepare the souls of people for the coming of the Savior. However, the preaching of the Baptist was short-lived. Shortly after the baptism of Christ, the prophet was captured and thrown into prison.

On the throne was the son of Herod the Great, who killed many of the Bethlehem babies in his time. However, Herod the Younger was distinguished by compassion: he penetrated the words of the Messenger of God and was afraid to anger Heaven and the people who so loved John. But the boldness of the prophet did not please either the king or his wife.

For the truth, the Forerunner was imprisoned in a dungeon, as everyone in the district heard about.

A year later, in the king’s palace, there was a wide feast in honor of his birthday. For the noble people, Herod’s stepdaughter Salome danced. Her dance led the ruler to wild delight, which is why he promised her that he would give her everything, even half the kingdom, as a reward.

At the instigation of the queen mother, who hated John fiercely, Salome chose a terrible wage. The young girl publicly declared her desire to the king, demanding the head of the Baptist. Herod was afraid of the wrath of God, but he was even more afraid that the word of the king would become an empty sound.

At the same time one of the guards brought the head of John the Baptist, handing Salome.

The legend says that before the severed head of the innocent prophet was buried on the Mount of Elyon, she endured terrible mockery from evil and godless people. All those present, wishing for the death of the Baptist, have paid with their lives. For them, the Lord has prepared no less painful trials.
