The Presentation of the Lord: what is this holiday
In the Orthodox church calendar, a special place is given to holidays dedicated to our Savior. They are reminiscent of important events that took place with Jesus Christ during his life.
Candlemas is the so-called Twelve Great Feast. This means that this date is on the list of the 12 main dates in the church calendar of any year. It is dedicated not only to the infant Christ, but also to the Virgin Mary herself.
Thus, this holiday is dual in its meaning.
The meaning of the holiday
The ancient Jews were supposed to baptize babies on the 40th day after birth, if it was a boy. The Virgin Mary brought Christ to the Jerusalem temple on the fortieth day, as the rules demanded. According to ancient custom, it was necessary to sacrifice a lamb and a bird.
Poor families brought two pigeons. So it was with Maria, who brought the dove and the dove.
The prophecy of Moses was fulfilled. The baby was ordained in faith and met with this world at that moment. Also, church leaders call this moment the meeting of two great epochs — the Old and New Testaments. That is why the holiday is called the Meeting, for in translation this word means “meeting.”
After the ceremony of initiation into the faith, the Mother of God, Joseph and baby Jesus returned to Nazareth.
