The Presentation of the Lord: The Feast of Introducing the Temple
Every Christian Orthodox holiday is of great importance in the life of a righteous person. The Presentation of the Lord is one of the most important days. On this date, the greatest event occurred — the manifestation of God to the world.
history of the holiday
The Presentation of the Lord is a day marked by the meeting of the baby Jesus with the world, which he came to save from sin. In another holiday is called the Epiphany. He has other names, such as the Purity of Mary, the day of candles, or the festival of introduction to the temple.
Meeting with the Old Slavonic and translated — «meeting». This meeting took place on the 40th day after the birth of Jesus Christ and on 32 after circumcision.
The Virgin Mary brought the baby to church from Bethlehem to Jerusalem. She came along with Saint Joseph. Such a long journey was obligatory at that time according to the Mosaic Law.
This law also stated that sacrifice was necessary, so the Virgin Mary had two pigeon chicks with them. The first person who saw Jesus Christ was Simeon the God-bearer, who conducted the rite of consecration of the infant to God. It was after this that Jesus Christ became not only the future Savior, but also a part of the world of people.
Traditions and celebration of the Presentation
The feast of the introduction of our Lord into the temple is done by Orthodox Christians every year on the same day — January 15th. For other faiths, the date of celebration is different from ours. On this day, prayers are read and festive liturgies are held in all temples.
Many clerics organize a procession, which symbolizes the desire to meet with Jesus and the Virgin Mary. This holiday is called the day of candles, because at the divine service it is customary to consecrate church candles and take them home to pray at home with them.
Also, many of February 15 read prayers at home. Not everyone has time to go to church, so people often read prayers to the Candlemas, without leaving home. Here is one of these prayers, which is read three times — in the morning, in the afternoon and in the evening before the main prayers:
The womb Devic sanctified with thy Christmas, and blessed the hand of Simeone,
as before, having forerunned, now hast saved us, Christ God;
