February 20 begins Shrovetide week. This is a time of mass celebrations, observance of the traditions of the holiday and delicious pancakes. Every day Pancake Day has its own name: it reflects the customs of our ancestors, who have reached our times without any changes.

Traditions of the first day of Shrovetide

The observance of traditions on this day, as in ancient times, was associated with ceremonies to attract love, wealth, as well as a rich harvest and a comfortable life. Our ancestors believed that to sleep a little longer on the first day of Shrovetide — to a rich harvest of flax. By this time, slides for festive skating were built, boys and girls sang funny songs and made an effigy of Shrovetide. They drove him in a sleigh across the village and overturned into a snowdrift with jokes and funny jokes.

So they said goodbye to winter, showing her that the time was running out, and the long-awaited warm spring was coming on his heels.

The hostesses on this day baked the first pancakes, symbols of the bright sun, rich harvest and hospitable family. The first, by tradition, was given to the poor or left on the threshold of the house — in this way the memory of the departed ancestors was honored.

Now Maslenitsa is not only a broad celebration, but also preparation for Great Lent, as well as Light Easter — the main holiday of Orthodox Christians.

Ancestors believed that their deceased relatives influenced the weather conditions and could help grow a good harvest, so they remembered them every day, asking for protection and help. The children sang funny songs while riding on the hills, which was also a kind of request to the ancestors. Also, through the fun, people showed how happy they were to say goodbye to the winter cold and finally feel the gentle touch of the warm sun:

“Aye yes Maslenitsa, Ai, beauty. We meet you, we welcome songs! From the roller coaster ride, oat pancakes!

Hello, Maslenitsa, Hello, good! ”.

On Monday, only children skated from the hills, adults were busy with the latest preparations for the festive fun and seeing the winter. The men completed the swing, the women did housework.

On this day, young daughters were sent to their parents’ house, where they helped with the housework — they baked pancakes and also got the opportunity to talk a lot with their relatives. At the evening feast, they usually agreed on how the Maslenitsa week would pass.

It is believed that the mood and well-being of each family for the whole year depends on how the first day of Shrovetide passes. That is why loud laughter sounded from everywhere, people thanked each other for their help, wished all the best and always welcomed and fed each guest so that the year would be nourishing and rich.

Many traditions are observed to this day, because the centuries-old rituals are not only separate festivals, but also a way to bring prosperity to life, enlist the support of the Higher Forces, remember departed relatives, and also eat enough before the upcoming Lent.
