Red Hill: the traditions and customs of the national holiday
Red Hill runs on the first Sunday after Easter. This is a national holiday, accompanied by mass festivities, as well as associated with many traditions and customs.
The celebration of the Red Hill is one of the favorite events of young people. It was always accompanied by round dances, singing and fun. The holiday got its name from the word “red”, which means “beautiful”. With the advent of Christianity, the Red Hill is timed to Fomin Sunday and has another name — Antipaskha: in this case, the prefix “anti” means not “against” but “instead of”.
The holiday continues Easter week.
Traditions and customs of the holiday
The youth gathered for celebrations on that day, drove round dances and glorified the spring that had come.
Young people gathered on the hillocks and hillsides, and at dawn they began to sing and in every possible way invited the spring warmth.
The game connected with the marriage ceremony was widespread in Russia. Young people got up in pairs, chose the guy leading. He had to catch up with one of the couples, break her and lead the girl away.
The young man, left alone, became the new leader and began to hunt for a new couple.
Young people organized fist fights. Thus, they showed their boldness and valiant power to potential brides.
An interesting custom was the pouring of water over the girl. With such an original gesture, the young man designated his bride, and then sent matchmakers to her house.
The youth put new outfits on the Red Hill, because it was on this day that solemn wedding ceremonies were held, and the unmarried had the opportunity to look at each other. For the same reason, no girl stayed at home — so as not to lose her betrothed and appear in all its glory.
On holiday, they threw coins into the deepest well in order to attract happiness to themselves and their family for a whole year. At the same time, they often made wishes, believing that on this special day it would come true.
One of the unusual rites was washing with water from the icon. First they were washed, and then their face was rinsed with this water. This tradition goes back centuries and, according to legends, provides a person with strength, health and well-being.
Reading prayers on the Red Hill was a must. They prayed for the health of their loved ones, asked for help from the Higher Forces in any questions, the girls prayed for a good bridegroom.
On the holiday, guests were invited from everywhere, baked loaves, prepared a festive dinner, asked the Higher Forces of the good Sun, good luck and happiness for the whole year. By tradition, a piece of cake and a painted egg were left on the hill behind the outskirts.
Many traditions and will have sunk into oblivion. But those that have come down to us are sacredly observed by many people. On the Red Hill, most young people attract love to their lives, because this particular day contains mysterious forces that help in finding the second half.
