How to celebrate Palm Sunday
Orthodox will celebrate Palm Sunday April 9th. It became a palm in Russia because palm trees do not grow in a harsh climate, and willow is the first spring tree, a symbol of life and rebirth. Since ancient times, the symbolic tree has been popular with our ancestors: there is even a tradition to whip each other with its branches in order to expel negative, diseases and sorrows from the body.
Jesus commanded the Orthodox to live, to love his neighbor and not to encroach on someone else’s. The righteous life of those who followed the Son of God is crowned with glory through the ages, and their great deeds are noted in the New Testament. In order to purify the soul before the Bright Resurrection of Christ, it is very important to repent of your voluntary and involuntary sins.
On Palm Sunday, the Orthodox go to serve in churches and temples, carrying with them a bunch of verbal branches, so that the priests sprinkle them with holy water. These branches carry home so that they serve as protection against any adversity. Also on this day several verbal bouquets are carried to the cemetery.
Work is prohibited on April 9, so it is best to dedicate the day to meetings with close relatives at a modest holiday table.
