Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary: the main church holiday of August
In August, believers celebrate an important holiday — the Day of the Assumption of the Virgin.
The Assumption of the Virgin is the most important Christian festival of August. The Dormition is one of the twelve great feasts; it has one day of preprades and seven days of celebration. Its importance and significance is also emphasized by the fact that the holiday itself is preceded by the Assumption Fast, strict but short-lived. He recalls the abstinence in food, which the Most Pure Mother of God herself adhered to before the end of her earthly days.
Also on this day, the prayer «The Virgin Mary, rejoice!» Has a special power. Believers attend church, because on the feast of the Assumption a special all-night service is held.
How did the last days of the life of the Virgin Mary go?
It is known that the Theotokos prayed a great deal, going to Calvary, where they crucified her Son Jesus Christ. She also prayed at the Holy Sepulcher. So one day, the Archangel Gabriel appeared to her, who had previously appeared with the good news of the immaculate conception and the imminent birth of Jesus Christ, the Son of God.
Now the archangel Gabriel was sent to convey to the Virgin Mary the news of the imminent departure of her soul to heaven, to the eternal Kingdom of God.
On the last day of the earthly life of the Virgin all the apostles gathered. The apocrypha describes that when she lay down and was ready to meet with her Son, the whole room was lit up, angels appeared and Jesus Christ himself. The Mother of God only closed her eyes blissfully, and the Savior took her soul in her hands and carried her to heaven.
It is also known that at the request of the apostle Thomas, who had not managed to say goodbye, the stone was removed from the tomb of the Virgin Mary. But the body of the Blessed Virgin Mary was not there: only her clothes remained, exuding a pleasant smell that did not at all resemble corruption. Later, the Mother of God appeared to the apostles during the meal and announced that from now on she would always be with them.
Interesting facts about the Assumption of the Virgin
The very name of the holiday was, of course, on a wonderful event. The Virgin Mary did not seem to die, but fell asleep after the ordeals and sorrows that she experienced in mortal life. From the apocryphal stories it is clear that Jesus only accepted her soul in the kingdom of God.
After the burial, her pure and immaculate body was also lifted up.
Everything that has to do with the descriptions of the Assumption of the Virgin is written in the form of apocrypha. The Bible itself gives absolutely no information about this. It does not say that she did not die, or that she was buried.
In the Catholic type of religion, special emphasis is placed on the ascension of the Mother of God and her further coronation as the Heavenly Queen from the Holy Spirit, as His bride, from God the Son, as His mother, and from God the Father, as His daughter.
In Orthodoxy, the holiday is celebrated annually on August 28 and is non-transitory. Old style is August 15th. Especially the solemn service held in Jerusalem at the place of burial of the Virgin.
