The tradition of saving salt — in the format of superstition

The tip that spilled salt — to the shed tears is known to all of us since childhood. They say that this common sign portends a lot of misfortunes and quarrels.

All over the world, the attitude towards salt is multifaceted — to recall at least the well-known wish of the newlyweds to eat together 16 kilograms of salt. But in Russia, this object in the beliefs also has a purely domestic coloring.

The appearance of this sign dates back to the 17th century, at that time salt was highly valued due to its large deficit. At the same time in our country there was a large number of various riots, and in general the social situation was rather tense.

So, excessive, sometimes to fanaticism, frugality with salt was found. And if the precious product fell apart on the floor, scandals and quarrels were a natural reaction to such an offense.

Hence, the belief that has survived to this day, when the younger generation does not understand how one of the cheapest products can cause global climate change in a home.

Our Russian people are known not only for an abundance of superstitions and will accept, but also for ready-made “recipes” how to avoid certain troubles. In this case, the belief says:

I sprinkled salt — laugh and hit yourself on the forehead stronger.

You can also collect the scattered product from the floor and apply it to your crown. But the salted soup is another sign: it means that the hostess, who cooked it, fell in love.

Whistling in the house — to the money lost

Despite the fact that in the 60s solo whistling in musical works was very popular (it suffices to recall Valery Obodzinsky’s remarkable vocalism “I am returning home”), popular rumor with respect to such liberties was rather severe. Whistling in the house meant looking at the money.

This sign in homes where money was treated as a source of income and the basis of wealth was relevant at all times. It is said that whistling in the presence of other people is to show oneself impolite.

Say, whistling attracts evil spirits into the house.

According to another one, a free whist can frighten a brownie, who will give a tear, and at the same time take with him not only the well-being in the dwelling, but also well-established peace in relationships. To replace the house-keeper, supposedly, a strong wind comes under your roof, which “blows out” completely all the wealth acquired over many years.

The «windy» aspect of this belief, apparently, always instilled horror in the souls of sailors. For them, any strong wind — to bad weather, storm and gale, which are similar to death on the sea.

Therefore, in the midst of sailors, it was not necessary to pamper themselves and their company with a frivolous whistle.

However, the true roots of this omen should be sought in a religious context. Whistle can lose the patronage of the Virgin Mary.

And they say that in the house with the money you can and memory «whistle.»

If you put a shirt on the left side — you will quarrel

This superstition is also inherent only to our Russian people, and is not found anywhere else. First of all, if a dress is turned inside out — a person who leaves the house in such a dress automatically loses his chances for successful work.

Folklore on this occasion was more categorical: a disorderly person was destined to be either drunk or beaten. And so much worse than this can not be.

The explanation for such a severe punishment to which an inattentive man or woman is subjected is quite simple. In former times there were no second-hand and other shops with utterly cheap clothes.

Therefore, the attitude to any dress, everyday or festive, the people were clearly careful.

In addition, all kinds of amulets were often embroidered on the dress or shirt — in the form of patterns. It is clear that the ritual of being neatly dressed and neat was revered holy.

However, there are funny beliefs on this topic: a woman with a skirt rolled up to the left should have given birth soon.

Sew on yourself — sew up memory

Did you happen to find out right before leaving the house that the button on the shirt rests on an «honest word», or the seam on the pants, on the most «interesting» place, was sold out indecently?

The first reaction is to grab the needle and, in order not to be late for work, try to quickly restore the normal look of the garment. However, the “disturbing siren” of the spouse or mother-in-law immediately turns on: quickly take off your shirt, you cannot sew on yourself!

However, there is another belief here — simply changing the shirt and going out in a different robe, because, they say, to sew in front of the road is good luck to lose.

In fact, there is a Russian national superstition, with elements of mysticism, which gives it even more flavor. A sign says: stitching clothes on the body, a person automatically “sews up” his memory. Perhaps the origins of such superstition relate to the times when the needles were not the most comfortable, and if you need a shot, you can infect blood or get tetanus.

But the “cure” for such superstition is just a humorous one: take a string with your mouth — and your memory will not run away from you.

On the threshold came — the memory of the ancestors disturbed

Such a belief is not so popular among the people, but it is still common and relevant when it comes to you personally. In fact, this superstition goes deep into history when our ancestors were still pagans.

In those days, the threshold had not only symbolic, but also spiritual, cultural significance. From the same place, superstitions came to us not to stretch out a hand for greetings and not to transfer any objects through this part of the dwelling.

Remember?

This is all because, since ancient times, the threshold was a kind of boundary where the territory of the dwelling ended, and external space began. In both of these «dimensions» spirits dwelt.

In the house they were gratified by the owners, but beyond the threshold was the land full of dangers.

The threshold, known for its sacral meaning, was the abode of the spirits of our ancestors, and therefore it performed security functions. Our ancestors guarded the house from otherworldly forces. Facts are known when the ashes of our ancestors were buried just under the threshold.

Here is an interesting superstition.

Where woman’s hair fell — the grass does not grow

There is a very interesting superstition that, they say, at the place where a woman’s hair falls — there is no grass growing. Interestingly, long before the advent of the microscope and the science of chemistry, our ancestors were well versed in the character of a person by his hair.

The indicators of color and structure were taken into account. In former times, a woman had no right to go out without a headscarf.

And if somewhere they saw a woman with a disheveled head, then the first question arose automatically — a sorceress?

Unlike our contemporaries, our ancestors believed: hair has magical powers. Many rituals and rituals are associated with it.

It was believed that a relative should not be made his hairdresser, storing trimmed hair was considered unsafe, and if the hair fell from an uncovered female head, the grass will not grow.

Went on another’s tracks — you risk losing your legs

Remarkable Russian national superstition, which can be objected as much as you want. However, this will not lose its relevance. Because at the time of our ancestors traces are often «spoke».

It happened for the reason that before all sorts of military conflicts and other disturbing actions were much more than now. And, to escape from pursuing enemies, people literally spoke their traces.

In addition, our ancestors at all times were famous as experienced hunters who very skillfully set all sorts of traps and traps.

From here and superstition — do not step on the trail, which may be just an appearance of a real imprint of a shoe or bare foot.

In addition to this superstition, the signs that someone following in the footsteps of a stranger could “pick up” a disease or a bad fate from the earth are connected with other people’s tracks.

Thus, all sorts of plots on traces are still relevant today, especially in rural areas, where the traditions of ancestors are much more honored, and folklore is preserved more carefully.
