Major Russian omens and superstitions

Superstitions and omens are of great importance: they suggest when we are lucky, and warn of possible troubles. But the majority will often interpret incorrectly, not knowing their true meaning.

The Russian people from time immemorial was considered superstitious. Omens based on observation hide much more sense than we used to think. For example, salt spilled promises discord in the family and tears. Why precisely salt?

Many people will think that this sign is connected with the taste of the product, but this is not so. Now salt has become affordable and cheap, but in olden days only rich people could afford it. If such a valuable product appeared on the table in a poor family, it was used sparingly and tried to be taken care of.

Having scattered salt, the culprit incurred the wrath of the household. To neutralize this superstition, it is enough to throw a pinch of spilled salt over the left shoulder and laugh.

Anyway, all superstitions are time tested and often are signs of Destiny. They warn us against rash actions, warn of difficulties, or, conversely, promise luck and joy. This knowledge will be the key to a happy and successful life of every person who believes in their actions.

Whistling in the house

Many were faced with the expression «do not whistle — there will be no money.» According to beliefs, whistling attracted evil spirits and frightened the house-guard, who was protecting the home from negative encroachments. The whistle also calls for the wind, which blows financial prosperity out of the house. Sailors are wary of whistling on the ship, fearing to attract a strong storm.

According to the sign, by whistling we turn away the Higher forces from ourselves and attract failures into life.

Clothes inside out

In the old days, people treated clothes with care and tried to keep it as long as possible. Hand-sewn, she kept the warmth of her hands and protected her master from damage and the evil eye. Negligent attitude towards clothes was usually accompanied by a caustic comment: “clothes inside out — you will be beaten”.

This expression meant that the person lost protection and is subject to negative influence from the outside.

Sewing on yourself

«You sew on yourself — you sew up the memory.» Another sign, which means that repairing clothes on yourself is at undue risk. Negligence was never encouraged, and in ancient times threatened with serious illness and even death.

It was possible to inject the infection with a needle prick, and in the absence of drugs, it was difficult to prevent the disease.

Knock on wood

It is believed that the tree — a strong source of earthly power, able to ward off adversity. In the old days, and even now, people, having heard unflattering words addressed to themselves or having said too much, try to undo the negative consequences by tapping the tree three times. The triplet, the symbol of the Higher Forces, also in a mystical way influences a happy end.

A knock on the tree was complemented by triple spitting through the left shoulder: they believed that this gesture drives away the evil spirits on the left side.

Empty bucket

To meet a person with empty buckets — to the loss. In the past, a woman with empty buckets did not foretell anything good: during times of drought, wells dried up, and people had to look for water in remote places. Often it was a risky exercise, because inadvertently slipping on the banks of the river, you could miss valuable inventory and hurt yourself.

Now, having met someone with an empty bucket or a wheelbarrow, people spit over their left shoulders and say: «Chur me, mind you.»

Pass Things Over the Threshold

Our ancestors always protected the threshold of the house from negative influence, therefore the transfer of something was carried out only if the human foot was on the threshold. Conspired things are not uncommon in the modern world, so energy protection does not hurt. If something is passed to you, stand with one foot on the threshold and cross your fingers — this will help undo the negative impact of the thing being transferred to you.

Sit on the table

The table has always been a revered place among Russians. All the meals and holidays were held at the spacious tables located in the upper room. Each household has been assigned a specific place.

Also on the table there was food collected and extracted by hard work, so the seat on the table defiled both the meal and the food. Sitting on the table brings poverty not only to himself, but also to the owners of the house.

Sit down on the track

Before travel were risky activities, especially in times of mudslides. Predatory animals, bandits and bad weather could delay the traveler and bring trouble on his head. “Sitting down on the path”, people attracted luck, because the help of native walls gave confidence in the successful outcome of any journey.

Black cat

Everyone knows that a black cat crossing the road is unfortunately. This superstition also comes from ancient Russia. In those days, black cats treasured and tried to keep out of the house. They were a kind of charms against fires and were the keepers of the hearth on a par with the brownie.

The lonely roaming master cat was a symbol of the misfortune of the family from which she ran.

Broken mirror

The costly mirror in the old days was not the way we see it now. In those days, mirrors were not just expensive, but status things that talked about wealth. The complexity in the manufacture and transportation of a fragile object further raised its value.

No wonder that a broken mirror brought on 7 years of unhappiness — this is the period our ancestors considered sufficient to save up for a new attribute.

Table corner

According to legends, an unmarried girl should not have sat on the corner of the table. It was believed that she would not be able to get married and would remain an old maid. Later came up with an excuse.

If a girl had to be crowded and sit where she was not supposed to, she would whisper, “The bridegroom with an angle will be”. This meant that her betrothed would take the bride to her home and provide a roof over her head.

Bad throwing — the groom will curve

Young girls often say this phrase when cleaning. It means that a bad housewife will not attract a decent fiancé and only her loser will be able to marry her. Previously, the matchmakers came to the house of the bride and agreed on marriage.

What kind of mistress the future bride will show herself, and this will be her further fate and marriage.

Signs and beliefs can also bring good luck and well-being into our lives. Careful attention to them will help to avoid trouble. Remember that the more positive thoughts you have in your life, the more protected you are from negative influences. Adjust yourself to positive emotions, boldly strive for your goal and don’t forget to press the buttons and
