Consider the issue in the article.
Fundamentals of Meditation Technique
At the word meditation, everyone has the image of a yogi sitting in the lotus position. This is the best posture for spiritual practices.
According to the Vedic teaching, the posture of the practitioner decides everything, because it reflects the state and direction of thinking. If a practitioner consciously chooses a position for meditation, the course of his thoughts also takes the right direction.
However, newcomers to take the lotus position and be in it for a long time is not at all easy. What to do? It is necessary to gradually accustom the body to this position, and at first use a different position of the body for the practitioner.
This is permissible and justified. What poses exist for spiritual practices? There are many of them, and you can even meditate lying down and while walking.
However, classic are exactly sitting posture. We will talk about them.
How to choose the right posture
The main thing in meditation is the convenience of body position. Not only should the posture be appropriate — you need to feel comfortable so that the inconvenience does not distract from thinking. It’s bad if your legs get numb during practice or your back hurts!
It is unacceptable. Therefore, at the very beginning, choose the optimal posture so as not to suffer during meditation.
Basic requirements for a meditator’s posture:
- straight spine;
- spread shoulders;
- straight neck;
- relaxed muscles.
Here, perhaps, the most important thing that you need to adhere to in meditation. An even spine is necessary, because cosmic energies pass through it during practice — from the top of the head to the coccyx.
If you slouch, then the spine will not be able to conduct life-giving energy.
What is slouch? These are not strong back muscles that make it difficult to hold the spine in a straight position. Over time, the muscles will strengthen, and you will not be difficult to sit with your back straight.
Use a high pillow, and it will be easier for you to keep your back in a straight position.
Relaxed muscles talk about the practitioner’s mental comfort — this is very important during meditation. If a person’s thoughts revolve around a household problem, a spasm or tension of the muscles of the body occurs — this is unacceptable.
To relax the muscles, you need to get out of your head disturbing thoughts.
Sometimes newcomers may allow another misstep due to excessive effort to keep their backs straight — bend the spine forward. It is unacceptable.
Such a posture is unnatural for the body and will lead to pain.
Some meditations can be done sitting on a chair, but this is an exception. In general, yogis indicate the need to touch the knees of the floor. This can only be achieved with time.
The beginner will not be able to do this, because the ligaments are not stretched — it will be painful. Therefore, the use of special pillows.
Important! You cannot sit in meditation in Turkish — the flow of energy through the spine is disturbed.
Seven correct meditation postures
Yogis offer the following postures for the practitioner:
- half lotus;
- sitting on a chair.
These poses differ in the position of the buttocks — when the practitioner touches them to the floor or his feet (heels). Virassana and Vajrasana poses — the practitioner sits on his lap. Siddhasana, sukhasana and two lotus poses — the practitioner sits on his buttocks.
Try all poses to choose the right one to start.
Siddhasana — this is a star pose. It is considered perfect, and each practitioner’s task is to master it over time.
The practitioner should put the heel of the right foot to the right of the anus, and the heel of the left foot to the left. No need to sit on the right heel, it just touches the hip of the leg. To master the pose, you need to watch the video.
In addition to the spiritual effect, siddhasana heals the practitioner’s body.
Lotus — This is the second desirable posture for practice. The difference from siddhasana — feet lie on the thighs, and do not cover the genitals. In order to sit in the lotus position, you need to have flexible joints and ligaments.
Do not seek to immediately master this position of the body, just train your joints — you will sit down with time.
Semi lotos do, if you can not sit in the lotus position. In this case, both feet are not on the hips — one foot is lying on the ground (floor), and the second is on the thigh of the other leg.
Comfortable and practical posture for beginners.
Sukhasana — posture with crossed limbs. Yogis consider it the best for beginners to master the practice.
This position helps to strengthen the muscles for the development of more complex asanas.
Two poses on the knees — vajrasana and virasana. The difference poses —
in virasana, a practitioner sits with his buttocks on the floor, and in vajrasana — on his heels. Mastering Vajrasana improves digestion.
Virasana (the pose of the hero) is difficult to master, since it is difficult for beginners to be in this position for a long time — their legs go numb.
Pose on the chair suitable for those who are not able to be long in any of the above positions. Why a chair?
Because a sofa or an armchair is not suitable for collecting thoughts in meditation — the body out of habit will want more comfort than sitting with a straight back and can fall asleep.
You need to sit on the edge of the chair, stretch your spine up, straighten your shoulders and lower it slightly. If it is difficult for a long time to keep your back in a straight position, you can lean against the back of a chair — but there is a risk to fall asleep.
Over time, teach yourself not to lean.
What pillows can be used in meditation? The pillow should not be very big and soft — buy a comfortable pad in the store so that the buttocks fit on it.
If there is no pillow, you can roll the blanket or blanket several times — also suitable. Gradually accustom to the correct posture, you can not sharply limit yourself in comfort — your whole body is sick.
