From the biography of Sergius of Radonezh
The future saint was born on May 3, 1314 in the village of Varnitsy, in the family of noble boyars, Cyril and Mary. Parents, distinguished by righteousness and piety, called their newborn son Bartholomew.
Even before his birth, when the child was in the womb, the parents knew that the youngest, the third, their son would be extraordinary and devote his life to serving God. Numerous signs spoke of this, which the Lord sent to Mary when she was pregnant.
One of these cases, perhaps the most famous, is the triple exclamation of a baby in the womb. It happened while reading the Gospel, and this sound was heard not only by Mary herself, but also by the people who were at that moment next to her.
When the child was born, his parents noticed amazing features: little Bartholomew did not drink milk during fasting days, refused maternal breast when Maria took meat dishes for food.
Maria and Cyril sought to give their children an education. Bartholomew grew up in elementary school. The boy grew up responsive, kind and religious since childhood, but the trouble was that he didn’t work well with his studies.
Because of problems with mental development, the letter was very hard for him, so at school he went with the badge stigma, because of which he became an outcast and had to endure constant ridicule and reproach.
Tired of all this, Bartholomew turned to God with a tearful prayer and asked him to give him the ability to understand the Holy Scriptures and learn better than his comrades. Hearing the boy’s prayer, the Lord sent him under the guise of a monk of one of his angels.
Bartholomew met this angel-monk and, kneeling before him, asked him for help. The real miracle happened after this meeting — the future saint instantly learned to read and understand the content of any book read.
When Mary and Cyril died, Bartholomew with one of his elder brothers, Stephen, went to live in the forest. They built a cell there, and later built a church, which was soon consecrated.
A few years later, Bartholomew became a monk and became known as Sergius.
The life of the saint was broken in 1392, on September 25 — in the old style, on October 8 — in the new.
Wonders of Sergius of Radonezh
Surprising wonders of St. Sergius of Radonezh became famous even during his lifetime. He healed the sick, raised the dead.
Not only Sergius of Radonezh helps his students — he is also considered the patron saint of soldiers and the protector of the Russian land. The saint received such a “status” as a result of one of the events that occurred in the XIV century — this is the well-known battle of Kulikovo in 1380.
As one of the legends tells, Russian soldiers owe their victory to it to Sergius of Radonezh. Before the beginning of the battle, Dmitry Donskoy came to the saint and asked for his blessings.
Sergius promised him victory in the battle, and he himself, while she was walking, was on her knees and begging the Lord to help liberate the Russian land from the Tatars, as a result it happened.
The memorial day of Sergius of Radonezh is July 18 (July 5 — old style). This date is not accidental. In 1408, the Tatars ransacked the monastery in which the saint lived and prayed to God.
Enemies took everything that was connected with it, including valuable icons. Later, in 1422, the cathedral began to be erected at this place — the monks worked there.
And then another miracle happened: Sergius of Radonezh appeared to one of the monks in a vision and asked him to free his body from water and land. No one could interpret this vision correctly. However, soon, when people began to dig ditches for the future foundation, a coffin with the imperishable relics of the saint was found.
This event happened just on July 18 (in a new style).
