In the calendar of the Orthodox Church there are special days in which the living commemorate the departed. It is customary to remember not every deceased person’s parental Saturday — there are rules that, in keeping with all Orthodox, support ancient traditions, remember the forefathers who died prematurely or died for the sake of other people.
The Orthodox Church helps in this, explaining to parishioners when and how to celebrate such days.
In the Christian calendar there are days called "parenting saturdays"in which believers remember deceased relatives. There are several such holidays, each has its own name, its own characteristics and is celebrated once a year.
For these days, church services are obligatory, in which parishioners pray for their relatives. At the end of the day, according to Orthodox traditions, funeral feasts, or commemorations, are held.
According to the Gospel, it was on the Sabbath day of the week that Jesus Christ was laid in a tomb and mourned. Therefore, the Sabbath was chosen as the day of remembrance of those who had died.
Sometimes these days are mistakenly called "Ecumenical parental Saturdays", although the Orthodox faith marks only two calendar dates on which are held "ecumenical"or general, requiem funeral:
- Myasopustnaya — celebrated in winter-spring, on the last Saturday before the Last Judgment Week (a week before Lent).
- Trinity — celebrated in spring and summer, on the last Saturday before the feast of Pentecost (the birthday of the Church of Christ, or the feast of the Most Holy Trinity).
Unlike ordinary parents, during the ecumenical period, all Christians are remembered, regardless of kinship, and especially those who have no relatives and no one to remember.
In the universal meat-parental Saturday, a special funeral service is read with prayers for the granting of eternal life and for the remission of sins, called "The memory of all the departed Orthodox Christians from all ages, our father and brothers".
This parental Saturday got its name because the next Sunday after it is called "meaty week". On such a day it is allowed to eat meat for the last time before Great Lent.
Also this Sunday is called "Little Maslenitsa", because after it begins the week of Shrovetide.
The parental meat-sweet is also named because of the obligatory commemoration of relatives on this day, among which parents are in the first place.
Meat Pust is the first major parenting Saturday in the year to commemorate deceased Christians. Particular attention when making prayers on the Holy Mother’s Sabbath is given to the Orthodox who have died away from their native land, at sea, in the mountains, in battle, from infectious diseases or from hunger, from the effects of natural disasters, to those who could not repent before death, and also over whom the funeral rite was not performed.
It is believed that with their prayers the living can help the dead, especially on this day.
This day is not accidentally chosen for remembrance, since the next Sunday after the universal meat-holy parental Saturday reminds of the Last Judgment of Christ, which should be done over all people and will appoint its fate to everyone.
In addition to the two ecumenical parent Saturdays, there are six more parent days — Dimitrievskaya (autumn), Commemoration of the departed warriors, Radonitsa and the 2nd, 3rd and 4th weeks of Great Lent (these holidays are celebrated in spring). Three weeks is the second, third and fourth Saturdays of Great Lent. All parenting Saturdays have a rolling calendar date, except for the Commemoration of the departed warriors, which is celebrated on May 9th.
On this day, remember all those killed during the Great Patriotic War.
There is one more number for commemorating the fallen warriors. This is September 11th.
The tradition has been going on since 1769, when in the war of Russia with Poland and Turkey they decided to celebrate on the feast of the Beheading of John the Forerunner the commemoration of all Christian soldiers who fell for the Tsar, Fatherland and Faith on the battlefield.
Dimitriev’s parental Sabbath was originally celebrated as a memorial for warriors who laid down their heads in the battle of 1380 at the Kulikovo Field, but over time it became a general commemorative day. They are intended to commemorate our loved ones and loved ones.
The service, held on Dimitriev’s parent Saturday, precedes the memory of the holy great martyr Dmitry Solunsky. He is considered the patron saint of Prince Dmitry Donskoy, who, after the victory of the Russian troops on the Kulikovo Field, offered to perpetuate this event with an annual commemoration of fallen soldiers.
Over time, the memory of this was erased and the memorial Dimitriev Saturday became one of the parent days.
In the next four years, parental Saturdays do not fall in January or December. They distributed from February to November:
Universe Parental Saturday
On Friday evening or Saturday morning, you need to go to the temple and pray not only for the parents who have died prematurely, but also for all loved ones and relatives who have passed away. On this day, it is customary not only to give notes for the dead and to put candles, but also to give alms — products, which are then distributed to the poor.
It is not forbidden to visit relatives in the cemetery and distribute money to poor people there. But it is forbidden to talk about the dead badly so as not to anger them. The commemoration of relatives by alcohol is prohibited — the church condemns such actions categorically.
Fun feasts, any songs are unacceptable. However, one should not grieve too much, it is better to pray, remembering the dead.
On Radonitsu the weather matters. If it rains and a strong wind blows, it is believed that the departed are angry. In this case, you should go to the morning service and put candles for the dead.
Then you must visit the cemetery and remember the deceased there, but the main feast must take place at home. A visit to the cemetery is a desirable, but not necessary, event because it can be removed on any given day and this is the duty of every relative of the deceased, and eating and even less alcohol near the graves is absolutely unacceptable.
Covering the table for the memorial meal, you must put an additional device for the deceased, you can light a candle and read the prayer. Before the start of the meal you need to say: "Kingdom of Heaven (name of the deceased)".
Exhibit treats (sweets, painted eggs, cookies) and open the vents on the windowsills.
On parental Saturday, a bath is heated, but they themselves do not soar in it, but leave a clean towel and linen, so that the departed can wash off worldly sins, cleanse themselves from thoughts that prevent him from entering the bright kingdom.
It is considered a good sign if Radonits falls on the day the child is baptized.
There are several rules to follow:
- In no event on this day one can not only swear, but even raise one’s voice, and also drink alcohol and be too sad for the departed. Excessive grief is not welcomed by the Church these days. Scolding and quarrels upset the dead.
- Doing homework is allowed, but without undue zeal.
- You can not leave the service before it ends and deny those who ask for alms.
- On this day, suicides are not commemorated, except for those who died voluntarily under pressure, for example, in cases when people give their lives for the sake of others, the Bishop gives permission for this. Such deceased people can be buried in the church, in the premature demise of these people there is no their fault. To commemorate suicide is a special day. This is the Universal Trinity parental Saturday. On this day, special words of mourning for the suicide are read in the service.
- On all parents’ Saturdays, prayers are obligatory, in which it is allowed to ask for distant relatives, and not only for relatives. Prayers on the Sabbath give parents the opportunity to be cleansed by sinners, both those who were killed and those who died in an accident.
The story of one of our readers Alina R .:
Money has always been my main concern. Because of this, I had a bunch of complexes. I considered myself a failure, problems at work and in my personal life haunted me.
However, I decided that I still needed personal help. Sometimes it seems that the matter is in you, all the failures are only a consequence of bad energy, the evil eye or some other evil force.
But who will help in a difficult life situation, when it seems that all life is rolling down the slope and passing by you. It is difficult to be happy working as a cashier for 26 thousand rubles, when you had to give 11 for renting an apartment.
What was my surprise when my whole life suddenly changed for the better overnight. I could not even imagine that one could earn so much money that at first glance a knickknack could have such an effect.
It all started with the fact that I ordered a personal one.
