What are kosher and halal products, and is it worth paying for them?
For products marked «Halal» or «Kosher» will have to pay more!
We understand: whether excess expenses are justified.
Immediately make a reservation that those who choose such products according to national tradition and to comply with religious rules can not be doubted.
Following the customs of ancestors requires cooking from the right foods. But also to those who are far from religion, such products can be useful because they:
- Very carefully checked. And there is no mandatory certification of food in Russia.
- Made from high quality raw materials for environmentally friendly technologies.
- Meat animals are slaughtered by the most gentle methods.
- Religion also requires the use of different dishes, boards and appliances for cooking meat and other products, which is correct from a hygienic point of view.
- Ethnic cuisine of this kind usually fits perfectly into the rules of a modern healthy lifestyle.
Kosher — products permitted by the rules and laws of Judaism:
— ruminant meat with cleft hoof cut strictly from the front of the carcass
— meat of any non-predatory bird
— sea fish with fins and scales
— alcoholic beverages, but cooked according to the canons
Tref (forbidden) food:
— any products and dishes containing blood
— meat of animals that were killed or died from natural causes
— meat not ruminant or not having the «right» hoof animals
— fish that has no scales or fins, seafood
— milk and meat products cooked together
— containing any artificial components
«Halal» — permissible by Muslim canons:
— the meat of any non-sick animals, with the exception of pigs
— river or sea fish
— any berries, vegetables or fruits
— milk products
Anything that does not fall under the canons is called «haram»:
— meat of animals that died their deaths or died accidentally or not killed by the canon
— meat of predators: birds and animals
— products containing artificial or forbidden additives
Requirements for the production of products «Halal» and «Kosher» are similar:
You can use strictly the meat of absolutely healthy animals.
No antibiotics or hormones in the process of growing.
Feed — only natural and natural.
Slaughter — strictly according to the canons: an experienced miner, instantly, with a sharply sharpened knife, with a prayer formula.
All blood should flow out of the carcass, internal organs examined for hidden diseases.
The differences are not significant.
Thus, halal allows the use of electric current, scalding of birds and does not require the complete removal of blood remaining in the carcass.
That is why what is kosher can be recognized as halal, but not vice versa.
Of course, we mentioned only the basic rules. Finding such products on the counter is simple: “Halal” and “Kosher” have so-called confirmation trademarks.
These may be certificates of the International Center for Standardization and Certification «Halal» of the Council of Muftis of Russia or regional committees under the spiritual departments of Muslims «Halal».
A kosher certificate (exporter) is issued after the rabbi has verified the complete production cycle of a product, and at some stages this control must be carried out continuously.
With such tight control, products are almost guaranteed to be of high quality, which means that an overestimated price is acceptable in this case.
But the choice still remains for the buyer.
