He was the first who began to withstand whiskey in burnt barrels, so that the drink acquired a completely new taste. There is a legend, according to which burnt barrels turned out by chance. Once the manufacturer of such barrels accidentally spoiled them, but regretted throwing out the unsuitable goods. He decided to send a drink on the river to New Orleans in the same barrels. During transportation, the drink has improved its taste and aroma. An unprecedented drink created a sensation, the locals now ordered exclusively «Bourbon whiskey».

In 1873 there was a turning point in the history of the drink. Bourbon at that time became the most popular drink in the United States, it was even called the «blood of America.» This year, Carrie Nation, a husband who died of drunkenness, together with like-minded people, tried to persuade the cowboys to stop drinking. Such an anti-alcohol campaign contributed to the deterioration of whiskey’s reputation. In 1920, the “dry law” was adopted, which also affected the fate of the drink. Bourbon was sold only in pharmacies at that time; it could also be obtained illegally. The drink has become very expensive. After the repeal of Prohibition, Bourbon was named the national drink of the United States.

Bourbon is a type of whiskey that has a special taste, aroma, technology and production regulations. In order for the drink to be called «Bourbon», it is necessary that it meets the following requirements:

  • as part of the drink should contain a mixture of cereals, among which the majority is corn (about fifty-three percent of the total mass);
  • bourbon must be kept in oak barrels, burned from the inside, for a period of two years;
  • beverage production is permitted only in the United States;
  • the composition should not contain flavors, dyes and flavor enhancers;
  • distillation is allowed only at a fortress of eighty percent or less.

Ready bourbon has a rich dark golden color, which becomes close to amber with age. The longer the drink is aged in oak barrels, the darker its color is when it is bottled.

Bourbon has a sweetish aftertaste and a heavy, pleasant aroma, reminiscent of vanilla with cinnamon. Due to the aging in barrels, the taste of the drink is more pronounced than that of other varieties of whiskey. It is important to consider that the sale comes as a pure bourbon, and mixed with other types of alcoholic beverage.

What is the difference between bourbon and whiskey? The peculiarity of bourbon is that corn is used for its production, and not barley. In addition, it is customary to maintain it in oak barrels burned from the inside. Also, it must be produced in the United States and poured into glass containers.
